Uhlsport Hellenic Football League Division 2 West

Shrivenham 1 - 2 Cirencester Town

Match Report by A Smith

Manager Clive Messenger and assistant Gavin Jones had a strong squad to pick from this week with the return of Tim Bond and Kieran Jones and new signing Jack Ayres starting on the bench.

The weather turned nasty just as the ref blew his whistle and the game began in a heavy downpour which left the supporters wondering what sort of game they would have to watch but within the first minute their question was answered with Lee Clatworthy being called upon to make one of his trade mark saves from the Shrivenham centre forward. Shortly afterward Liam O’Brien made a good interception, passed the ball through to Dan Roberts who slotted the ball home, 1 – 0 to Cirencester.

Cirencester very nearly went two up when the Smith’s (Jack and James – not related) combined and Jack shooting just wide with a snap shot. Jack came close again in the 15th minute when he was put through by Roberts, almost immediately from the clearance Bond made a good solo run, only to shoot over.

The game now settled into a tight midfield battle until the minute when James Smith hit one that the Shrivenham keeper almost dropped into his own net.

The first half finished with Shrivenham coming back into the game in the latter stages.

The second half kicked off with Cirencester in the ascendancy although they failed to score after a succession of corners which enabled Shrivenham to draw back level from a free kick that the Cirencester defense failed to clear.

Again the game settled into a game dominated by the defenses which saw neither side make a meaningful strike on goal. In the 63rd minute Mikey Coram was substituted for Rob Mant and in the 73rd Dan Hill came on for Kieran Jones. Within 2 minutes of the substitution James Smith crossed for Kyle Pitts to knock the ball into the path of Jack Smith who hit the back of the net. 2 – 1 to Cirencester.

Jack Ayres was given his debut on 81 minutes when he was brought on for James Smith. The last action came in the 90th minute when Roberts shot over the bar.

This was a hard fought win for Cirencester who didn’t find second gear.
