Match Report by A Smith
Cirencester Town’s development squad started this match against Wantage Town at a canter when Shane Bumphrey broke clear in the first minute for a shot which was saved easily by the Wantage keeper. Despite having the better of the opening few minutes Wantage wasted a good opportunity to open the scoring in the third minute when they went close from a well taken corner.
Cirencester’s were a little unlucky not to be given a penalty when Dan Roberts was brought down in the box but still managed to get back to his feet and his a strong shot which the keeper held.
This bought about a period of sustained pressure from the young Cirencester Team which culminated in a superb left foot volley from Liam O’Brien which was watched by the unmoving goalkeeper just go over the apex of bar and post, Bumphrey also went close after a good run by Roberts who again linked up to provide Cirencester first goal when Bumphrey finished after a good cross from Roberts.
This motivated the Wantage team and Lee Clatworthy had to make a brave save after the opposition forward was put through. The fear was that Cirencester would relax a little as they had done on the previous game after 20 minutes but, after Bumphrey had flicked on the ball for Jack Smith to shot just wide and Clatworthy was again called on to make a good save, this was not the case and the game still went end to end with Cirencester creating the better chances..
Bumphrey scored his sand the teams second goal after being put through by Jack Smith but it provedto be the last action for him as he was injured and he was substituted for Dan Hill.
Half time 2 – 0
The second half got off to as quick a start as the first when Hill got on the end of a good through ball to shot just over. The next 10 or so minutes were reasonably calm as both sides slowed down to take stock of what was happening.
In the 54th minute Tom Jehu was substituted for Mikey Coram and Luke Allen was brought on for Kieron Jones shortly afterwards. Cirencester now began to dominate and scored their third in the 61st minute when Roberts was rewarded for his efforts by getting onto a very good cross from James Smith to leave the goalkeeper stranded and slotted home.
Roberts was again involved in the action when he was brought down when going through on goal. The resulting free kick was driven home by Tim Bond to make it 4 nil.
The fourth goal pulled the rug from under the feet of the Wantage Team and the game dissolved into a series of niggly fouls from both sides with the last action of any note was a good save by the Wantage keeper after a good shot from Jack Smith.
Final Score 4 - 0
This was a good all round performance by the young team which was supported by a good crowd.
