Strong cross-wind ruins local derby match as a spectacle

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 Central

Cirencester Town  1 - 1  Highworth Town

The Easter Monday Bank Holiday fixture brought neighbours Highworth Town to The Corinium Stadium and after a match ruined as a spectacle by the strong cross-wind the score was tied at 1-1.

Highworth kicked-off playing towards The Shed end of the ground, with the diagonal wind more behind them than not, and immediately launched the ball down their right flank where it was promptly returned for Cirencester to work across the pitch to the opposite flank but the hosts didn’t keep it for long either.

This was generally the pattern of the first half as both sides found judging the weight of pass difficult in the swirling wind and whilst there were a few shots neither side troubled their opposing ‘keeper unduly.

Cirencester started the second period positively and were rewarded with an early corner but the visitors came closest to scoring when Miguel Alves fired into the side netting after 55 minutes.

The home side pressed forward more earnestly and by the mid-point the Highworth goal had survived a number of attempts until finally in the 82nd minute the deadlock was broken when a cross from the left flank was headed against the right post by Joe Shepherd to rebound towards the centre of the goal where AIDAN BENNETT completed the task of heading it into the net.

A few minutes later as the visitors responded they survived a quick counter as a potential 1v1 was partially blocked for their ‘keeper to collect the ball, and almost immediately a deep cross from their right flank was converted at the back post by the head of CHARLIE McCRAE to level.
