A Penalty Kick secures victory against local rivals

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  1 - 0  Highworth Town

In perfect conditions for football The Centurions faced local rivals Highworth Town for the final time this season and after a tough battle a Jake Lee Penalty Kick secured at least 3rd place in the league table and with it a place in the ‘play-off’ finals.

Cirencester kicked off in positive fashion and soon produced a neat exchange of passes around the edge of the Highworth box but in an attempt to stop it a visitor was injured leading to two early substitutions. The resulting Tom Handley free kick was brilliantly pushed over his cross-bar by ‘keeper Connor Johns.

Shortly after the mid-point Ashley Edenborough latched onto a ball over the Cirencester back-line but his hurried effort was wide of the left post and a few minutes later the home side opened the scoring from the Penalty Spot as JAKE LEE smashed it into the back of the net after Tommy Anderson had been brought down.

Cirencester had much of the possession during the first period but had failed to make it pay and when they did get through Johns was in sparkling form to deny them.

A few minutes after the break Levi Irving broke through to the edge of the box but his shot was deflected over Johns to strike the cross-bar although the Referee awarded a goal-kick.

Minutes later Lee headed a corner kick over from close range and around the hour-mark as Highworth pressed Cirencester countered for Johns to instinctively save an Aidan Bennett close-range contact.

As the game was drawing to a close Johns tipped another Irving effort over his bar and Josh Nelmes curled an effort wide.
