The Centurions beaten at home for the first time this season in a league match

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  0 - 1  Willand Rovers

In perfect conditions for football Willand Rovers visited The Corinium Stadium and it was soon evident they had come to compete and after scoring an early goal in the second period they defended resolutely to become the first side to defeat their hosts in the league this season.

Within minutes of the kick-off the visitors had been awarded a couple of free kicks and Cirencester had threatened down both flanks but neither goal-keeper had been particularly troubled as the few shots that were taken passed wide or over the target.

As the interval approached the visitors survived a strong appeal for a Penalty Kick when their keeper, George Burton, punched Levi Irving in the side of the head after he arrived late for an aerial challenge.

Cirencester continued to press but were unable to break through a stubborn visitor’s defence and it remained goal-less going to the interval.

Within ten minutes of the re-start the visitors scored the only goal of the game as a corner kick from the right cleared the home defence and rebounded off the thigh of ADAM POOLE at the back post and into the net.

A couple of minutes later Nick Peare struck a fierce shot over the visitor’s bar and this was followed shortly afterwards by Joe Shepherd firing wide of the left post.

Into the final quarter and Cirencester pressed hard but Willand got bodies in the way and Burton made several fine reaction saves to keep them out.
