The Centurions unbeaten run comes to an end at Thornhill Park

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Slimbridge  3 - 2  Cirencester Town

It was ‘unlucky 13’ for The Centurions as their unbeaten run came to an end at Thornhill Park – the home of Gloucestershire neighbours Slimbridge - as The Swans recovered from an early setback with a determined performance and a terrific hat-trick from Edji Mbunga.

‘Top of the table’ Cirencester took the lead after 4 minutes when SHAYNE ANSON followed up his initial shot to head the rebound over the stranded ‘keeper and inside the far-left post.

The visitors continued to press for much of the first half and despite having numerous ‘free kicks’ and ‘corner kicks’ were unable to add to their score due to determined defending and poor decisions whilst Slimbridge mounted the occasional attack and took their chance when EDJIDJA MBUNGA smashed a rebound inside the left post to equalise shortly before the interval.

Within 3 minutes of the re-start Cirencester nearly regained the lead but Jake Lee’s header was cleared from the goal-line and this was soon followed by a couple of crosses passing through the home box untouched but as the hour mark approached the home side were beginning to mount more threat and EDJIDJA MBUNGA headed his side into the lead following a goalmouth scramble.

Three minutes later EDJIDJA MBUNGA completed his hat-trick with a superb strike from the left channel of the Cirencester penalty area that flew inside the far-right post.

Cirencester continued to push forward and were rewarded with ten minutes remaining when TOMMY ANDERSON darted across the 6-yard box to head a Ben Whitehead cross inside the left post.

As The Centurions searched for an equaliser it became a little ‘frantic’ but the home side held out to secure the three points.
