The Centurions avenge Thornhill Park defeat

GFA Senior Challenge Cup

Semi Final

Slimbridge  0 - 4  Cirencester Town

The Centurions avenged their defeat at Thornhill Park eleven days ago by knocking The Swans of Slimbridge out of the GFA Senior Challenge Cup at the Semi Final stage and will face Yate Town of the Southern League – Premier Division South in the final.

Both sides started positively but it was the visitors that opened the scoring when NICK PEARE bundled a free kick over the line from a few yards after 7 minutes.

As both sides struggled in the windy conditions Cirencester created a couple of 1v1 situations - Zack Kotwica’s chip was held up in the wind to be caught by Lewis Adams and Ben Whitehead fired narrowly wide of the right post as Adams advanced.

In reply Slimbridge came close with a Martin volley that was just wide and as the interval approached they pressed strongly but were unable to open their account.

After the break Slimbridge put the Cirencester defence under early pressure but nearly paid the price as a counter attack enabled Whitehead to round Adams before his effort from a narrow angle was cleared from the goal-line by Toby Lawrence.

Just after the mid-point of the half Ben McLean burst forward to send a loose ball over the bar from a few yards and almost immediately Cirencester scored two goals in two minutes to put the game beyond their hosts as LEVI IRVING finished from close range following a period of pressure in the Slimbridge box and ROSS GABRIEL provided a deft touch from a similar distance.

Ten minutes from the final whistle ROSS GABRIEL produced a sublime piece of control as he darted into the right channel of the home box to ‘kill’ a through ball and tuck it inside the far-left post.
