Late Penalty Kick secures victory for The Centurions

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  2 - 1  Barnstaple Town

It was ‘top v bottom’ at The Corinium Stadium as the home side faced Barnstaple Town in a match affected by strong winds that remained goal-less at the interval before coming to life in the second period – but it took a very late Penalty Kick to secure the points for the hosts.

During a first half that was affected by the strong cross-wind Cirencester mounted numerous attacks down their flanks but were unable to take advantage of their possession as the wind or the visitors intervened - Tommy Anderson rounded the ‘keeper to see the ball run away from him for a goal-kick, Josh Parsons effort was deflected wide of the target and Ben Whitehead fired over the bar.

Within five minutes of the re-start Cirencester opened their account as Whitehead had two shots blocked before he laid the ball back to JOSH PARSONS who drove it inside the right post from the edge of the box.

The visitors were defending resolutely to deal with the numerous corner kicks and from one of them Joe Shepherd struck a superb shot that passed narrowly wide of the top right corner.

Shortly after Cirencester failed to convert a 1v1 the visitors equalised as a muddle in the home defence resulted in OWEN HOWE latching onto the loose ball and slipping it wide of an advancing Alex Harris.

Cirencester continued to press forward and in ‘added-time’ some neat inter-play supplied Anderson as he burst into the box where he was tripped - Penalty Kick.

Captain JAKE LEE once again stepped forward to convert and secure the 3 points.
