Centurions overcome Citizens

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  4 - 2  Winchester City

A match between the top two form teams in the Division that began with an early Own Goal - to give the visitors the lead at the interval - came to life in the second period with five goals, 3 penalties, a Red Card and numerous Yellow Cards before the home side secured the 3 points.

In very difficult conditions due to the strong wind at The Corinium Stadium both sides struggled to control the ball as passes and free kicks went astray and it was a back-pass that led to the opening goal for the visitors as it picked up pace to pass wide of the ‘keeper for an OWN GOAL within the first ten minutes.

Cirencester pressed for much of the first half but failed to open their account whilst Winchester mounted counter attacks with one leading to a goal-line clearance but after the interval the game really came to life as JAKE LEE levelled from the Penalty Spot to liven things up.

Around the mid-point LEVI IRVING was put through to tuck his shot in off the inside of the right post and three minutes later Alex Harris made a tremendous save to deny the visitors an equaliser from the Penalty Spot.

To take full advantage Cirencester increased their lead when loanee ZACK KOTWICA converted from close range at the back post.

Seven minutes later Winchester were awarded a Penalty kick that OLIVER BALMER converted to add to the tension for the final ten minutes and in added-time the visitors were reduced to ten men, but as they pressed forward a clearance was collected by BEN WHITEHEAD who stormed forward to smash the ball into the net to seal victory for the Centurions.
