Victory at Frome takes Cirencester to the top of the table

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Frome Town  0 - 2  Cirencester Town

The much-anticipated top of the table clash between Frome Town (1st place) and Cirencester Town (2nd place) was played out in front of 690 spectators and it was the visitors that took the 3 points thanks to two well-taken goals and resolute defending.

The game started at a frantic pace with a goalmouth scramble in the Cirencester box in the opening minute and a save from home ‘keeper James Carey a couple of minutes later.

Play continued in this ‘end-to-end’ fashion and a sliced cross required Carey to punch it clear but the visitors were soon back as NICK PEARE latched onto a free kick in the 19th minute to slide the ball inside the right post.

Frome pressed down their flanks but despite corner kicks and free kicks could not breach the Cirencester defence.

Cirencester’s Tommy Anderson fired wide of the left post and shortly afterwards NICK PEARE added his second with a superb free kick into the top left corner.

Almost immediately from the re-start Ellis Dunton did well to prevent James Ollis getting in on goal and before the hour mark Cirencester custodian Alex Harris had made a couple of good saves.

Frome sent plenty of crosses, corner kicks and free kicks into the Cirencester box as the half continued but the visitors defence was resolute and they were quick to counter to cause Frome concern.

In the final 15 minutes Frome made a determined effort to get on the score-board - Kane Simpson burst into the visitor’s box, Rex Mannings had a 1v1 with Harris and George Rigg fired wide of the left post - but it wasn’t to be and Cirencester left with the 3 points.
