Cirencester into semi-final of GFA Senior Challenge Cup with victory over Bristol City U23's

GFA Senior Challenge Cup

Quarter Final

Cirencester Town  3 - 2  Bristol City U23’s

Cirencester entered the GFA Senior Challenge Cup at the Quarter Final stage of this season’s competition with a home fixture against BRISTOL CITY U23’s and after an entertaining and competitive match made it through to face Slimbridge in the semi-final.

With a much-changed starting eleven Cirencester had the better of the early exchanges and they opened the scoring after 13 minutes when BEN WHITEHEAD produced a clever flick at the near post from a corner kick.

Gradually the young Robins began to settle but they suffered a further setback shortly before the interval when ROSS GABRIEL pounced to blast the ball into the roof of the net from close range following another corner kick.

Almost immediately City responded as Barney Soady clipped the ball to the back post for SEBASTIEN PALMER-HOULDEN to head home.

After the interval the game was more ‘end-to-end’ and on the hour a home player was robbed and the ball quickly fed to TOMMY BACKWELL who drove it inside the left post from 25 yards to level the scores.

During the next three minutes both sides came close to scoring as Palmer-Houlden headed against the left post and Cirencester had a goal disallowed for ‘offside’.

Cirencester regained the lead after 40 minutes when Aidan Bennett intercepted a pass on the edge of the City box to supply BEN WHITEHEAD who tucked his shot inside the right post.

City pressed forward in search of an equaliser and in ‘added-time’ they were thwarted by a superb save from Alex Harris in a 1v1 and Cirencester held on to go through.
