Cirencester close gap on leaders with victory over Melksham Town

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  3 - 1  Melksham Town

Cirencester returned to league action following their mid-week cup exploits with a home match against Melksham Town and after a goal-less first half moved into a 3-0 lead, before conceding a late goal, to take the 3 points and close the gap on leaders Frome Town.

Despite having much of the ball in the first half Cirencester could not break through their visitor’s defence and during the latter stages were tested themselves but it remained goal-less going to the interval.

Within 8 minutes of the re-start the home side opened the scoring when JAKE LEE forced the ball over the line from close range after his initial header from a free kick had been blocked.

Five minutes later Cirencester doubled their lead following a corner kick as NICK PEARE darted forward to powerfully head inside the far-right post.

With their two-goal cushion Cirencester pressed forward and as the game entered the final phase the pressure yielded a Penalty Kick as Tommy Anderson was brought to ground and Captain JAKE LEE stepped up to drive the ball inside the right post.

Melksham had nothing to lose so they threw caution to the wind and attacked their hosts, with Kyle Tooze often the outlet, and were rewarded when a long throw-in on the right flank reached JAY MALSHANSKYJ and he cut left to work his way along the edge of the home box before tucking his shot inside the right post.

Melksham pressed forward and launched free kicks and long throw-ins into the home box but Cirencester held out to take the 3 points.
