Centurions defy high-scoring Stags

Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  2 - 0  AFC Totton

Top-of-the-table Cirencester Town entertained third place AFC Totton at The Corinium Stadium in their latest league match and entertainment it certainly was with early goals in each half from the hosts and the woodwork struck a couple of times by the visitors before The Centurions secured the 3 points.

The visitors are the top scoring side in the Division and it was easy to see why with their quick counter attacks and movement near their opponent’s penalty area but it was the home side that struck after five minutes when ELLIS DUNTON volleyed home a free kick at the left post.

Within a couple of minutes Sam Griffin struck the crossbar for the visitors as he burst into the home penalty area and leading up to the mid-point they pressured the home defence to win a couple of corner kicks – home custodian Alex Harris tipped one over his crossbar and the other was headed against it before a follow-up cross was headed wide.

In this fast-paced, free-flowing match both Irving and Parsons had efforts blocked whilst Harris parried a fierce drive from Jordan Ragguette before the interval.

Almost immediately from the re-start Parsons had a shot blocked and struck a post with another before JOE SHEPHERD fired a bouncing effort into the top left corner.

The visitors responded and despite having plenty of possession they couldn’t find a way through the resolute home rear-guard with shots wide of the target, blocked, or dealt with by Harris.

Cirencester were also dangerous on the counter as Shepherd fired over and Dunton had an effort blocked at the left post.
