Cirencester knocked out of the League Cup

Pitching In League Challenge Cup

Second Round

Cirencester Town 1 - 2  Wantage Town

The Centurions returned to The Corinium Stadium after two long trips to Plymouth, that resulted in successive 1-0 defeats, to face Wantage Town in the Second Round of the League Challenge Cup and despite dominating possession for much of the game were defeated by a goal in the 90th minute.

After pressing and probing for most of the first quarter Cirencester went a goal down when they failed to clear an innocuous ball into their box and TONY LOGONGO took full advantage as he finished inside the far-left post.

Cirencester responded to the setback and a few minutes from the interval levelled the score when Aidan Bennett reached the by-line to cross for ROSS GABRIEL to finish from close range.

In the final minutes of the half visiting ‘keeper Kacper Kowalczyk pulled off a couple of superb saves to deny Joe Shepherd and Bennett whilst Tommy Anderson struck the underside of the bar.

The home side continued to press forward after the break but the visitors were proving resilient and quick to counter stretching the home defence for custodian Kevin Sawyer to be called into action a number of times to deny them.

In the final quarter Levi Irving struck a post following a driving run into the visitor’s box and after surviving much pressure Wantage countered to score the winner on 90 minutes as SHAQUILLE ISHMAEL tucked his shot inside the far-right post.
