Dominant Cirencester take the points

Pitching In Southern League 2020/21

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  2 – 0  Thatcham Town

After the strong winds of Saturday this mid-week fixture was played in calm conditions – resulting in a fast and furious affair with no-one allowed to settle on the ball for any length of time without being subjected to a challenge.

Cirencester started quickly against a very young Thatcham side and many of the opening attacks were down their left flank with Jordan Morris and Levi Irving prominent.

In a scrappy first half the home side were unable to open their account, despite plenty of possession, as Ross Gabriel and Josh Nelmes headed wide of the target, a Jonny Dennis effort was saved and Nelmes had a firm strike blocked by the ‘keepers legs.

After the interval Cirencester continued to press with Tom Handley delivering a low cross towards the near post where ARCHIE BRENNAN arrived to flick it past the ‘keeper.

Seven minutes later Cirencester doubled their score as Handley delivered a free kick to the left of the penalty spot for JOSH NELMES to head inside the far right post.

Despite being two goals down Thatcham were still dangerous, breaking forward at every opportunity, but the home defence stood firm although Alex Fragata did manage to fire wide of the target.

Around the mid-point of the half Cirencester produced a flowing move that resulted in a Nelmes header being blocked near the goal-line and as the game was drawing to a close the visitors goal was under a lot of pressure as Nick Hancock fired over from close range and ‘keeper George Legg produced a couple of superb ‘finger-tip’ saves to deny Dennis and Lee Llewelyn.
