Cirencester return empty-handed despite spirited performance at 2nd placed Frome

BetVictor Southern League 2019/20

Division 1 South

Frome Town  2 – 1  Cirencester Town

On a very soft pitch, that resulted in a ‘scrappy’ game littered with free kicks, second placed Frome Town scored either side of the interval and this was enough to secure victory against a spirited Cirencester.

The home side pressed from the off and within the first couple of minutes Kane Simpson sliced an effort wide at the back post but as the mid-point of the half approached Cirencester were beginning to retain possession better and threaten down their flanks and by the end of the half they were pressing their hosts.

In ‘added-time’ a quick counter attack from Frome resulted in DANIEL COTTLE opening the scoring when an attempted clearance on the edge of the Cirencester box rebounded into his path and he calmly finished into the vacant goal.

After the break Cirencester started very positively with Toumani Sidibe volleying a sharp chance over from 6 yards following good work from Nick Hancock.

Almost immediately a long punt down the centre was chased by Simpson and as he rounded ‘keeper Lewis Clayton he was blocked resulting in a Penalty Kick that ALEX MONKS smashed inside the right post.

Cirencester went on the offensive and ten minutes later MIKE POOK reduced the arrears from the Penalty Spot after Tommy Anderson was brought down as he latched onto a Levi Irving headed flick.

Encouraged Cirencester drove forward and another Irving/Anderson combination resulted in the latter being felled again but this time the Referee awarded the kick just outside the box and the ’wall’ did its job.

With 15 scheduled minutes remaining Frome were reduced to ten men but Cirencester couldn’t take advantage and the home side held on to take the 3 points on offer.
