Cirencester score five in first home fixture of the season.

BETVICTOR Southern League 2019/20

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  5 – 0  Melksham Town

The Centurions reacted to their opening day defeat to score five against Melksham Town in their first home match of the new season.

The visitors had scored six themselves on Saturday to end the day top of the league table but after a couple of near misses the home side opened their account when AIDAN BENNETT headed home following a corner kick that Melksham struggled to clear.

As the half was drawing to a close debutant Oliver Artwell (2nd Year scholar on loan from Forest Green Rovers) sent an inviting cross towards the far post for ALAN GRIFFIN to produce a trademark header into the top left corner.

On the stroke of half time Cirencester MIKE POOK scored from the penalty spot after Aidan Bennett was brought down by a double challenge.

Melksham started the 2nd half strongly and home ‘keeper Lewis Clayton was soon called into action to deny Luke Ballinger with a full length save and shortly afterwards Jack Ball struck the home cross-bar but it was Cirencester that increased their lead as OLIVER ARTWELL darted in at the back post to convert a Bennett cross from the left flank.

Five minutes later JOSH PARSONS scored from the penalty spot after he had been tripped.

Despite the score-line Melksham continued to press forward and Clayton was called upon to make several more important saves to deny them a foothold in the game or even a consolation goal.
