High-flying Yate end Cirencester's winning run.

Evo-Stik Southern League 2018/19

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  1 – 2  Yate Town

In an eagerly anticipated match between two sides in the top four of the Division it was second placed Yate that took the points to end Cirencester’s six match unbeaten run.

Despite the difficult windy conditions both sides started positively and near the mid-point of the half Mat Wieczorek produced a spectacular save as he pushed a 35 yard effort from Yate Captain Nick Peare over his cross-bar.

The deadlock was finally broken when a neat move released BEN WHITEHEAD to finish inside the right post.

Encouraged Cirencester continued to press and ten minutes later Whitehead volleyed home after a bout of head-tennis but the Referee – despite initially pointing to the centre circle – reversed his decision after discussion with his Assistant.

Yate equalised 2 minutes later when DAVID SIMS-BURGESS latched onto a clearance header to drive the ball into the net from 22 yards.

Within 2 minutes of the re-start Joe Guest delivered a low cross from the right for NICK PEARE to ‘tap-in’ at the back post.

Cirencester pressed in search of an equaliser and when they did break through Yate threw bodies in the way to block before mounting quick counter attacks.

In the final minute another Cirencester attack resulted in a couple of blocks inside the 6 yard box and a penalty kick being awarded - followed by a melee for the Referee to sort out.

After he dismissed a Yate player and booked one from each side, he found the ‘keeper sat on the ground seeking attention and once he had been sorted out the penalty kick was saved - some five minutes after it had been awarded.
