Griffin expecting tough test from FA Vase holders Thatcham Town this weekend

Cirencester Town manager Charlie Griffin expects his side to face a difficult question of their play-off credentials when they travel to Thatcham Town this weekend.

The Centurions go into Saturday's trip to Berkshire having taken 7 points out of a possible 9 in February and they know a win at Waterside Park will see them occupy a play-off spot going into the final 10 games of the Southern League season.

Griffin spoke to Severn Sport ahead of the weekend and said he was happy with his side's recent run, including Tuesday night's 4-1 win over Larkhall Athletic, but isn't getting too carried away yet.

"I'm very pleased to get back to back wins including against a strong Larkhall side. But we must keep winning games, simple. We need to keep putting in performances to put pressure on other teams.

We approach Saturday's game as we always do, going out to win and making sure we work hard and are also putting in high level of performances. At this time of year it's massive now so we need to be at it all the time, the lads know what I expect of them", Griffin added.

"Thatcham are on a good run so it will be a real strong test. We must be ready for a tough game and one we want to win to keep the run going."

Last season's FA Vase and Hellenic League winners Thatcham Town go into the game on the back of a 3-2 defeat at Bristol Manor Farm on Tuesday night – but the Kingfishers have won their other two fixtures month, including a 4-2 win over Evesham United.

Saturday's hosts currently sit in 10th place in the Southern League Division One South and will have play-off ambitions themselves, as they find themselves just 7 points off the top 6. They will be going up against the league's most potent strike force in Alan Griffin and Ben Whitehead.

The Centurions front two have scored 44 of their side's 77 goals this term, with Griffin on 17 and Whitehead the top of the pile once again on 27. And Charlie Griffin was full of praise for his strikers who netted 15 times between them in 2019 alone.

"Ben has been terrific again, having scored one on Saturday whilst setting up four and again doing the business on Tuesday with two excellent finishes.

Alan's been leading from the front as captain as well, he's got more goals this season and I know what I get from him- hard work and his strength, which is massive all over the pitch.

Their understanding of each others game has really come on and they know what great quality's they both have. Their work rate as a front two is outstanding they never give up always wanting more. They bring the best out of each other and long may it continue."
