Pook penalties secure passage to the next round of the Senior Challenge Cup.

G.F.A. Senior Challenge Cup 2019/20

Quarter Final

Cirencester Town  3 – 1  Bristol City U23’s

The spectators who braved the bitterly cold evening witnessed a fast-paced cup-tie that included two second half penalties as the home side recovered from being a goal down at the interval to a very young City side.

The young Robins kicked off and during the opening spell they had a couple of pots at goal and clipped the outside of the left post.

Cirencester’s response was a Mike Pook free kick that whistled past the right post but it wasn’t long before City took a deserved lead when SAM BELL rounded ‘keeper Lewis Clayton to score from a narrow angle.

Two more Bell efforts in quick succession were foiled by Clayton and gradually Cirencester began to see more of the ball with Shayne Anson heading over following a corner kick as the game became more even.

After the interval City produced more neat play but Cirencester equalised when MIKE POOK converted a penalty kick after he initially struck the bar with a free kick and the resulting scramble led to a ‘handball’ decision.

Shortly afterwards Clayton diverted a Tommy Conway effort wide in a 1v1 situation.

After a period of City probing a low shot from JAY MALSHANSKYJ, as he darted across the edge of the City box, gave Cirencester the lead.

Five minutes later Toumani Sidibe cut in from the right corner to be brought down and once again MIKE POOK stepped up to convert the penalty kick.

The closing stages saw the spirited City youngsters press and Cirencester counter but no further goals.
