Cirencester through to the next round of the League Challenge Cup.

League Challenge Cup 2019/20

Second Round

Cirencester Town  2 – 1 Yate Town

On a chilly evening at The Corinium Stadium Cirencester knocked Premier Division Yate Town out of a cup competition for the second time this season to progress to the next round of the League Challenge Cup.

After a frantic start from both teams it was the hosts that opened the scoring after five minutes when new recruit TOUMANI SIDIBE cut in from the right flank to score inside the right post with a low shot from 30 yards.

As Cirencester pressed Yate defender Sam Boulton produced two excellent blocks in as many minutes to prevent Jay Malshanskyj increasing the lead and his efforts were rewarded when Yate equalised following a break down their right flank drew ‘keeper Lewis Clayton out of position enabling OLLIE MEHEW to finish from near the penalty spot.

The rest of the half was ‘end-to-end’ with a number of blocks and ‘near misses’ at both ends and on the stroke of half time another Sidibe effort was cleared off the line.

Within five minutes of the interval Cirencester showed their intent as a fierce Jonny Dennis strike tested ‘keeper Adam Forster and as they pressed the visitors were limited to occasional counter attacks, with Louis Britton having a couple of shots whilst Cirencester’s Alan Griffin had a firm header tipped over by Forster and Levi Irving headed wide when well placed, but as the game entered the final ten minutes the breakthrough was made when a flowing move down the right flank released Tommy Anderson to the by-line and his chip to the back post was converted by JONNY DENNIS.
