Cirencester through to the next round of the League Challenge Cup after penalty shoot-out.
League Challenge Cup 2019/20
First Round
Cirencester Town 1 – 1 (4-3 Pens) Wantage Town
On a cold, wet and windy evening at The Corinium Stadium Cirencester progressed to the next round of the League Challenge Cup following a penalty ‘shoot-out’.
Wantage Town of the Central Division proved stubborn opponents - as despite plenty of possession and Jordan Morris crashing a shot against the cross-bar the home side struggled to break through - and in the closing minutes of the first half they took the lead with their only shot of the half when JORDAN HOWE fired into the top right corner from 30 yards.
Almost immediately Ollie Artwell made a driving run down the right flank to the corner before crossing for AIDAN BENNETT to provide the finishing touch from close range to equalise.
The second half was more of the same with Cirencester retaining possession for long periods and Wantage defending for all they were worth with many a block in their penalty area before counter attacking.
At the end of the 90 minutes it was still all-square and it went to penalties with Cirencester going through after AIDAN BENNETT, ALAN GRIFFIN, TOMMY OULDRIDGE and WILL CHRISTOPHER scored from the spot.
