Late, late goal sends Cirencester through to the next round of The Emirates FA Cup.
The Emirates FA Cup 2019/20
First Round Qualifying
Cirencester Town 1 – 0 Gosport Borough
LEVI IRVING scored his first senior goal for Cirencester three minutes into ‘added-time’, against Southern League Premier Division opponents Gosport Borough, and seconds later the final whistle blew to send the home side through to the next round of The Emirates FA Cup.
Cirencester came out of the blocks quickly to take the game to their Premier Division opponents and as early as the fourth minute Mike Pook struck a post directly from a corner kick but the visitors survived and in the 17th minute Matt Patterson finally tested ‘keeper Lewis Clayton who was in position to block his effort.
The home side continued to press with more corner kicks and free kicks peppering the visitors box but no reward and as the half entered the final 10 minutes Gosport began to keep the ball longer without really troubling Cirencester.
After the interval Gosport pressed more frequently and the game became ‘end-to-end’ with Owen Windsor coming closest to opening the scoring following a terrific move down the right flank.
The game continued in this fashion until the final 10 minutes when Gosport began to look the more likely victors as Patterson and George Barker had pots at goal but Clayton refused to be beaten and in ‘added-time’ a long punt from the ‘keeper reached LEVI IRVING who exchanged passes with Alan Griffin to enter the left channel of the penalty area to shoot - his shot was partially blocked but had enough on it to cross the line.
Seconds after the re-start the final whistle blew – Cirencester were through to the next round.
