Cirencester edged out of the FA Cup replay in extra-time.
The Emirates FA Cup 2019/20
Second Round Qualifying - Replay
Chippenham Town 4 – 3 Cirencester Town - (AET)
The first match in this cup-tie was exciting but this replay took it to another level as the teams produced a seven goal thriller that was only decided by an unfortunate goal deep into the second period of extra time.
After a fairly even opening period Chippenham took the lead when LUKE HAINES latched onto a clearance to smash the ball into the roof of the net from 20 yards.
Eight minutes later Cirencester levelled following a period of pressure on the left flank when MIKE POOK drove the ball through a cluster of players and it took a slight deflection en-route to the net.
The steady rain produced a slick surface that enabled the game to be played at an incredible pace and despite being ‘end-to-end’ it remained level at the interval.
The home side regained the lead seven minutes into the second half when Nat Jarvis drew the Cirencester defence towards him before slipping the ball right for KARNELL CHAMBERS to collect in space for a straightforward finish into an empty net.
Cirencester responded fifteen minutes later with a flowing move that reached JOHN DENNIS who cut right before driving the ball inside the left post.
As the 90 minutes approached Chambers missed a good chance for the hosts and Jack Freeman struck a post for the visitors but again the teams couldn’t be separated so it went to extra-time.
With virtually the last kick of the first period ALAN GRIFFIN completed a flowing move to tuck the ball home off the right post but almost immediately from the re-start TARIQ OSSAI levelled as he drove the ball inside the far left post.
Five minutes away from a penalty shoot-out Chippenham scored what turned out to be the winner as NAT JARVIS delivered a cross from the left towards the near post and ‘keeper Lewis Clayton, who had made many a fine save in both matches, had the misfortune to push the slippery ball into his own net.
A very disappointing way to bring to a conclusion a fantastic cup-tie.
