Late goal secures 3 points for Cirencester.

BETVICTOR Southern League 2019/20

Division 1 South

Highworth Town  0 – 1  Cirencester Town

The Bank Holiday fixture took Cirencester to near neighbours Highworth Town on one of the hottest days of the year and given the conditions the teams put in a considerable amount of endeavour but on a challenging pitch neither side was able to keep the ball long enough to produce any flowing football or create any openings to test their opponents defence.

It took a superb JONNY DENNIS strike from the edge of the home box late in the game to separate the teams.

During the game there were individual glimpses of skill from the players, occasional 3 or 4 pass moves but generally it was dominated by the long ball and Free Kicks and once the penalty area was approached there was not enough guile evident to create an opening.

Ten minutes before the scheduled interval a Josh Parsons free kick struck the bottom of the right post and minutes before the break Alan Griffin clipped a near post effort over the bar.

After the break, with Cirencester now playing up the slope, it didn’t really get much better as the half was littered with more long balls and Free Kicks – and occasional pots at goal.

Not a game that will linger in the memory for long but credit to the players for putting in so much effort on a ridiculously hot day.
