Ben joins Southern League Premier Team Weston-Super-Mare

As reported at www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk

Cirencester Town striker Ben Whitehead has joined Southern League Premier Division South side Weston-super-Mare for the 2019/20 season.

The former Swindon Supermarine and Didcot Town man missed the end of last term with a knee injury, but he is expected to be fit to start pre-season training with his new club, where Scott Bartlett has taken over as manager.

Whitehead, 25, had been a target for National League North club Gloucester City. He scored 47 goals in the 2017/18 campaign, following that up with 39 last season. In total Whitehead, who started out in the youth set-ups at Oxford United and then Swindon Town, netted a remarkable 86 goals in 85 starts and two substitute appearances for the Centurions.

"There was a lot of competition for Ben’s signature so I am delighted we have got him," Bartlett told Weston's official website. He is a good player, is at a good age and is hungry to do well. I have seen him several times over the past two seasons, he is exactly what we are after and will be a good fit for us.

“His goal record speaks for itself but he brings more than just goals. He is quick, has clever movement, he works hard and is decent in the air. I am delighted to have him and am looking forward to working with him.”

Whitehead added: "I’m delighted to sign for the club. After speaking to Scott about the plans he and the club have it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

I’d like to thank everyone at Cirencester for the last two years. I’m now looking forward to the new challenge and hope I can create and score goals to get the club back to where it belongs along with my new team mates.”

Weston were relegated from National League South last season, during which they parted company with boss Marc McGregor.
