Cirencester defeat 'play-off' rivals Evesham United.

Evo-Stik Southern League 2018/19

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  2 – 0  Evesham United

Cirencester returned to The Corinium Stadium to face Evesham United in a match that was important to both sides in their quest for a ‘play-off’ place at the end of the season and after a hard fought match the home side took the points with two second half goals.

‘The Centurions’ were forced into an early change when ‘keeper Mat Wieczorek pulled up after a couple of minutes and had to be replaced by young Development Team ‘keeper Sam Ayres who produced a very accomplished performance with a couple of exceptional saves on his debut.

The match was played in perfect conditions at a frantic pace with honours fairly even in the first half with both sides creating openings but unable to convert them - the nearest to a goal being a Tommy Anderson header that struck the right post - and as a result it was all square at the interval.

Eight minutes into the second half Cirencester opened the scoring when a series of quick passes inside the Evesham penalty area created room for ALAN GRIFFIN to side foot home from 10 yards.

The goal opened the game up and it became ‘end-to-end’ with both sides striking the woodwork, and both ‘keepers producing full length diving saves some 30 seconds apart to deny their opponent.

The home side were using their flanks to good effect and 5 minutes after the mid-point of the half a flowing move resulted in a cross from the right that fell to OWEN WINDSOR who fired into the top right corner for his first senior goal.

With nothing to lose Evesham made their substitutions and pressed forward but Cirencester were not to be denied their victory and defended resolutely whilst counter attacking with pace.
