Cirencester complete the league double over their FA Trophy conquerors.

Evo-Stik Southern League 2018/19

Division 1 South

Thatcham Town  1 – 2  Cirencester Town

Cirencester travelled to the scene of their FA Trophy defeat and ground out a victory in a game that was a test of their character and determination on a difficult, bumpy pitch. It certainly was not a game for the football purist as there were few flowing moves with the game peppered with free kicks and long balls throughout.

The match started at a brisk pace with goalmouth incident at both ends within the first ten minutes - Cirencester had the ball in the net at one end to be disallowed for a foul on the home ‘keeper and Adam Connolly cleared off his goal-line at the other.

The home side opened the scoring on the half hour when SCOTT REES latched onto a ‘flick’ into the penalty area to volley over Mat Wieczorek as he advanced.

Ten minutes later it was level as BEN WHITEHEAD smashed the ball into the top left corner following a free kick that Ellis Dunton headed into the mix.

Although Cirencester started positively after the break the home side tested their resolve with Kyle Tooze prominent but at the mid-point of the half Cirencester took the lead when Dunton launched a long throw to the near post for ALAN GRIFFIN to head over the ‘keeper who managed to get a hand to it but couldn’t prevent it dropping into the net.

The final quarter was dominated by long throws and kicks into the Cirencester box and counter attacks but no further goals.
