Cirencester win last game of the season but miss out on the 'play-off' places.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Shortwood United  0 - 3  Cirencester Town

Cirencester made the short journey to Nailsworth knowing that they had to win their last game of the season and hope that results elsewhere would be favourable to stand any chance of making the ‘play-offs’.

The visitors started quickly and made an early break-through as BEN WHITEHEAD headed home a Will Tunnicliff cross from the left corner after 4 minutes and whilst they had plenty of possession they failed to add to this by the interval due to some determined defending from Shortwood who grew in confidence as the game progressed – mounting a number of counter attacks.

After the break Cirencester continued to press and increased their lead when a Will Christopher cross from the right corner deceived the home ‘keeper who palmed it away from under his crossbar for AIDAN BENNETT to head home at the back post.

Seven minutes later an exchange of passes on the left flank enabled Tunnicliff to send a cross towards the penalty spot where ALAN GRIFFIN produced a header that looped over the ‘keeper and under the bar.

Unfortunately despite the 3-0 win and a run of 16 games without defeat Cirencester finished the season in 7th place – outside the ‘play-off’ places on goal difference.

A truly magnificent effort from everyone involved that kept the season interesting until the very last game. So near.......
