'The Centurions' exit the FA Cup at the hands of 'The Citizens' of Winchester.

The Emirates FA Cup 2018/19

Third Round Qualifying

Winchester City  3 – 0  Cirencester Town

Cirencester travelled to fellow Southern League side Winchester City for this FA Cup Third Round Qualifying fixture and were soundly beaten 3-0 to exit the competition.

The home side made the perfect start as they scored after 2 minutes following a free kick that resulted in a tap-in for ROB CARR and they doubled their tally, just as Cirencester looked to be getting to grips with the game, around the mid-point of the first half when SIMBA MLAMBO tucked a 1v1 with ‘keeper Matt Wieczorek inside the left post.

With a two-goal cushion the home side pressed their visitors who managed to counter and look more threatening during the final few minutes of the half.

After the interval ‘The Citizens’ came out of the blocks very quickly but the Cirencester defence stood firm before responding with a foray to the left corner where Ben Whitehead clipped the bar.

Shortly afterwards, before the hour mark, Cirencester were reduced to 10 men when Mike Pook was shown a straight Red Card for a low sliding tackle near the half-way line and as a result they changed to ‘three at the back’ in an effort to match Winchester in mid-field and pose a threat going forward and this they did as Whitehead and Owen Windsor fired in low shots – with Windsor also striking the post.

In ‘added-time’ Oli Bailey latched onto a ball down the right channel and as he cut into the penalty area he tangled with Adam Connolly leading to a penalty kick that JOE HAYWARD  smashed into the net to deservedly confirm entry into the next round for Winchester City.
