Cirencester lose 5 goal thriller to Gloucester City in final minutes of County Cup match.
GFA Senior Challenge Cup 2018/19
First Round
Cirencester Town 2 – 3 Gloucester City
In another highly entertaining game of fast, flowing football at The Corinium Stadium the home side conceded a goal in the final minutes to go out of the GFA Senior Challenge Cup at the first hurdle.
Cirencester came out of the blocks quickly with a couple of pots at the Gloucester goal within the first five minutes and they continued to produce many flowing moves throughout the first half as they switched play from flank to flank.
Gloucester for their part relied on counter attacks that were confidently dealt with by the home defence and at the interval there was no score.
The visitors were ‘gifted’ their breakthrough four minutes after the break when a scuffed clearance landed at the feet of JAMIE EDGE and he slipped the ball under the unfortunate ‘keeper as he advanced to open the scoring.
Cirencester responded positively to the setback with efforts from Anderson, Whitehead and Connolly before they equalised when TOMMY ANDERSON struck from the edge of the box.
Shortly afterwards Morris, who had often been the outlet for Cirencester, collected a pass and rounded the ‘keeper before striking a post and as the home side pressed Gloucester again took the lead as JAKE MAWFORD produced a clinical, curling finish from inside the area.
Three minutes later it was all-square again as BEN WHITEHEAD fired inside the far right post but as ‘added-time’ approached City were presented with another golden chance as the ball got stuck under the feet of Ellis Dunton and he had his ‘pocket picked’ for JAKE MAWFORD to finish from a couple of yards.
