Charlie talks to Severn Sport

Cirencester Town manager Charlie Griffin said his side need to stop giving away goals to defensive mistakes, after Gloucester capitalised on two defensive errors to win 3-2 in the GFA County Cup.

After a goalless first half Gloucester City took the lead inside five minutes of the second period when Cirencester goalkeeper Luke Merchant scuffed his kick straight to Jamie Edge. The former Arsenal man ran in one on one before slotting it under the young keeper.

Cirencester equalised through a great Tommy Anderson effort 15 minutes later. After the impressive Jordan Morris was fed the ball midway into the Gloucester half, the winger turned to thread the ball into Anderson on the right side of the box. The winger took a touch before rifling the ball past City keeper Adam Forster.

Despite the hosts defending resolutely and having the better of the majority of the game, Jake Mawford looked to have won the game when he cut in from the left side of the box before curling past Merchant with just five minutes left.

However, Cirencester set up a grandstand finish within two minutes when substitute Aidan Bennett slipped the ball through to Ben Whitehead on the right side of the box. Whitehead did what he does best and fired the ball into the bottom corner and levelled the game up.

Cirencester's comeback was only short lived and as we ticked towards the 90th minute a poor touch in his own box from Ellis Dunton, saw Mawford intercept the ball, round Merchant and win the game for Gloucester City.

City will now play current holders of the GFA County Cup, Bristol City U23s, in the quarter finals setting up a replay of the 2017/18 final from pre-season.

Both Ciren manager Griffin and new Gloucester City manager Chris Todd made changes to their sides from the weekend, with a lot of young players involved for both sides.

For City, they had Adam Forster in goal. Forster, who has previously played for Bath City and Paulton Rovers is currently playing for Bradford Town in the Toolstation Western League. With previous loanee Matt Yates leaving the club a couple of weeks ago, Forster did his chances of being snapped up by City the world of good between the sticks.

Elsewhere on the pitch there were great showings for Gloucester City U18s duo Miles Ferguson & James Unwin, with the latter coming on for new signing Wes Atkinson early on in the game.

Cirencester included some of their fringe players and players who were needing minutes, like Jordan Morris. The winger was very impressive and despite the fact his final ball wasn't perfect everytime, he kept at it and looked the most likely to create something for long spells.

Also, a special mention for Cirencester midfielder Tommy Ouldridge who was superb in the middle once again and continued where he left off in his stand out performance against Winchester City last week.

Cirencester Town have a free weekend due to the FA Trophy whilst Gloucester City travel to Welling United on Saturday in Chris Todd's first league game in charge.
