Cirencester suffer narrow defeat to former tenants Gloucester City.

Pre-Season Friendly

Cirencester Town   1 – 2   Gloucester City

Cirencester hosted former tenants Gloucester City of The National League – South Division in the latest friendly match played at The Corinium Stadium.

The first half was uneventful in terms of goals but the visitors took the game to Cirencester from the off as Joe Hanks burst through in the first minute - Matt Wieczorek blocked his fierce drive and caught the rebound off the incoming Chris Knowles.

Wieczorek was called into action shortly afterwards when Knowles latched onto an under-hit back-pass and the ‘keeper’s outstretched hand took it off his toe.

City generally dominated possession with Cirencester mounting counter attacks down their flanks, especially during the second quarter.

As the half was drawing to a close a neat City move created room for a shot that Wieczorek caught and Henry Spalding fired over from 30 yards.

During the interval both sides made a couple of changes in personnel and within 5 minutes City opened the scoring following a Hanks free kick that Wieczorek blocked but JAKE JACKSON pounced to finish from close range.  0-1.

Just after the hour JAKE JACKSON scored from the penalty spot.  0-2.

Despite this setback Cirencester continued to play their football and were rewarded when Jack Freeman won the ball near the centre circle to release BEN WHITEHEAD for a charge to the City penalty area where he confidently tucked it away.  1-2.

In the final minutes Cirencester nearly snatched a draw as Henry Spalding collected a cross at the back post but Matt Yates somehow blocked his effort.
