'Own Goal' at North Leigh provides victory for Cirencester.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

North Leigh   1 – 2   Cirencester Town

In a dour encounter, despite being played in the first warm and bright conditions for a long time, Cirencester came away from Oxfordshire with the spoils - courtesy of an ‘Own Goal’ from their hosts.

The game began promisingly enough as Cirencester’s Tommy Anderson was played in after 6 minutes for a 1v1 with Ross Grimshaw that the ‘keeper saved with his legs.

Ten minutes later the home side opened the scoring after a period of possession resulted in a series of corner kicks until BRAD CHALMERS converted at the back post with a powerful header.

Around the midpoint of the half Cirencester were increasing the pressure on the home defence, with Will Christopher and Will Tunnicliff providing support and crosses from both flanks, and when  Tunnicliff made a strong run to reach the by-line his subsequent cross was stabbed home by ALAN GRIFFIN from a few yards.

After the interval Cirencester started positively, reducing the home side to counter attacks, and just after the hour a home defender headed a Mike Pook free kick into his own net when he was put under pressure by an incoming Alex Albert for an OWN GOAL.

The home side reacted positively to this setback and Matt Wieczorek became more involved in the action and in the final minutes he made an important save to deny Chalmers in a 1v1.
