Cirencester survive Bishops Cleeve's second half rally to take the points.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town  3 – 1  Bishops Cleeve

With many games in the surrounding area falling victim to the rain of recent days the 3G pitch of The Corinium Stadium came into its own once again with another competitive match between two sides with different pressures - Bishops Cleeve seeking points in their battle to stay in the Southern League and Cirencester looking to reach the ‘play-off’ spots.

The home side had much of the play in an eventful first half - hitting the side netting twice, having a ‘goal’ that was deflected into the net by a Cleeve defender disallowed for ‘offside’ and numerous shots - before opening their account in the 40th minutes as a BEN WHITEHEAD flick struck a defender on its way into the back of the net.  1-0.

Despite this setback the visitors came out in very positive fashion for the second half and were rewarded with a goal within two minutes as JACK WATTS received the ball near the left side edge of the home penalty area, slipped his marker and clipped a low, curling shot inside the far right post.  1-1.

Encouraged by their early success Cleeve pressed for most of the third quarter but when Matt Wieczorek saved a 1v1 with Watts at this point the tide changed and within ten minutes Cirencester had regained the lead as Mike Pook headed a goal kick over the Cleeve back line and BEN WHITEHEAD quickly latched onto it to blast the ball into the roof of the net.  2-1.

As the game approached the final five scheduled minutes Cirencester increased their lead when MASON LEWIS appeared at the back post to volley home a cross from the left flank.  3-1.
