'The Centurions' win the battle of the 'in-form' sides.
Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18
West Division
Cirencester Town 2 – 1 Bideford
In an eagerly anticipated game between two of the top three sides, based on the ‘6-Match Form Guide Table’, Cirencester (1st) held their nerve to take the points and move above their opponents in the league table – although Bideford (3rd) have 6 games in hand.
It was apparent from the kick off why Bideford are at the top end of the ‘current form’ table as they immediately attacked their hosts who had to ‘dig-in’ to keep them at bay whilst counter attacking whenever possible and as a result the first half was ‘end-to-end’ with little goalmouth action.
After the break the pace increased as both sides pushed forward in search of a goal and Cirencester came close when Will Christopher sent a low cross through the 6 yard box as Alan Griffin charged in.
As the game entered the final 15 scheduled minutes Cirencester opened the scoring as they worked the ball forward and won a corner kick. Steve Oliver dived left to block Aidan Bennett’s resulting header and ALAN GRIFFIN was on hand to finish from a couple of yards. 1-0.
A few minutes later ALAN GRIFFIN scored again from close range after both Ben Whitehead and Ellis Dunton had hit the woodwork following a free kick sent into the box by Henry Spalding. 2-0.
In a hectic last ten minutes (including added time) Bideford threw everything at the Cirencester defence and were rewarded on the stroke of 90 minutes when JOSH KEY headed over Jonkerman. 2-1.
