Cirencester score in the first minute in sponsored Charity match.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town  3 – 1  North Leigh

At the third attempt the Macmillan Cancer Support charity match against North Leigh finally took place and the visitors provided some charity on the pitch as they gifted Cirencester a goal within the first minute.

North Leigh kicked off on a very cold evening and played the ball back towards their ‘keeper Connor Thompson as BEN WHITEHEAD charged forward to press. It looked a bit tight so Thompson decided to come out to meet the ball but slipped over just outside the penalty area leaving Whitehead the simple task of running the ball into the unguarded net. 1-0.

As the fifteen minute mark approached North Leigh began to string some passes together and push forward but suffered a further setback when BEN WHITEHEAD headed home a corner kick from the right.  2-0.

Despite this further setback the visitors continued to work the ball forward and the game became ‘end-to-end’ and just before the interval North Leigh opened their account when a ball into the box from the right flank found BEN GREEN  near the penalty spot. With his back to goal he dummied left then turned right to sweep the ball inside the right post past an unsighted Matt Wiezcorek. 2-1.

North Leigh started the second half very positively and around the mid-point Wieczorek was required to make a couple of saves with Roger James particularly prominent on the right wing.

As the half wore on Cirencester began to keep the ball better and cause their visitors some concern and as the game entered the final ten minutes they regained their two goal cushion as a Whitehead header looked to be going beyond the right post TOMMY ANDERSON darted forward to prod it home.  3-1.

The home side finished the game very strongly and an excellent save from Thompson denied Whitehead his hat-trick in the final minutes.
