Cirencester test table topping Taunton Town but suffer yet another 2-1 defeat.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

 West Division

Taunton Town   2 – 1   Cirencester Town

Cirencester made the long journey to Somerset to face long term divisional leaders Taunton Town and whilst they were adjusting to the pitch conditions found themselves two goals down within the first 15 minutes.

DAN SULLIVAN opened the scoring as he latched onto a loose ball in the right channel of the Cirencester penalty area and fired a low shot inside the far left post.

Ten minutes later LES AFFUL doubled the score as a ‘pull-back’ from the left neared the penalty spot and he was quickest to the ball to poke it inside the right post.

Cirencester reduced the deficit four minutes later when Henry Spalding released BEN WHITEHEAD to the left channel of the home penalty area and he struck a fierce shot that ‘keeper Lloyd Irish couldn’t keep out at his right post.

The goal gave the visitors confidence and from that point onwards it became a contest as they produced some neat football whilst pushing forward with more conviction.

Cirencester continued to work the ball forward after the interval and stretched their hosts who were forced to counter quickly but as the game neared the scheduled final 15 minutes Taunton were reduced to 10 men as Ben Adelsbury received a second Yellow Card (followed by a Red one).

Nine minutes later they were reduced to 9 men when Shane White was shown a straight Red Card for a challenge on Henry Spalding.

Despite plenty of possession and activity in the Taunton penalty area Cirencester were unable to break through and the home side took the 3 points.
