Cirencester concede a late goal in unfortunate circumstances to lose by the odd goal in three again.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town   1 – 2   Wimborne Town

Cirencester conceded a goal in the 90th minute, in unfortunate circumstances, after they had pressed their visitors for much of the second half to once again go down by the dreaded 2-1 score-line.

In an entertaining, fast paced, game that kicked off early, due to problems with the flood-lights, both sides showed their attacking intent from the off and mid-way into the first half Wimborne opened the scoring with a terrific strike from BILLY MAYBURY that flew into the top right corner – giving loan ‘keeper Thom Jonkerman no chance.

Cirencester pressed down their flanks and Wimborne countered with quick breaks and it was the visitors who had the opportunity to increase their lead from the penalty spot mid-way into the second half.  Toby Holmes took responsibility for the kick and drove it down the centre where Jonkerman saved with his legs as he dived right. In an instant he was back on his feet to make a sensational second save from a fierce volley.

A few minutes later Cirencester were level after a free kick from the right was fed back in from the left for ELLIS DUNTON to head home.

The action was ‘end-to-end’ as both sides looked for the win and on the stroke of 90 minutes ‘The Magpies’ broke the deadlock in bizarre circumstances. After successfully thwarting a Wimborne attack Jonkerman rolled the ball along the ground in preparation to launch it up-field but he hadn’t noticed a lurking opponent who ran from behind him to pinch the ball. The ball broke to TOBY HOLMES who had the simple task of rolling it into the empty net to take the points.
