'Storm Brian' the victor in 8-goal thriller at The Corinium Stadium.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town   4 – 4   Yate Town

‘Storm Brian’ battered The Corinium Stadium and as a result the players had to compete with the conditions as much as their opponents and the strong wind had a hand in a couple of the goals in this 8-goal thriller.

‘The Bluebells’ playing into the wind opened the scoring in the 14th minute when EUGENE KEARY headed home at the back post following a corner kick from the right.

AIDAN BENNETT replied for Cirencester five minutes later following good work from Forest Green Rovers youngster Tom Anderson.

A couple of minutes later HENRY SPALDING scored direct from a corner kick as the wind assisted strike struck the inside of the far post and rebounded into the net.

Shortly before the interval LEWIS LEIGH-GILCHRIST scored with a low strike from 30 yards and whilst Cirencester came close to regaining the lead when Jack Horrell struck a post the scores were level at the break.

Five minutes later Cirencester regained the lead as BEN WHITEHEAD swivelled and smashed the ball into the net from near the penalty spot.

This was quickly followed by a composed finish from AIDAN BENNETT as he tucked his shot inside the left post from a similar position to give the home side a two goal cushion.

Yate reduced the deficit twelve minutes from time when goal-keeper HARVEY RIVERS free kick, from 10 yards inside his half, was ‘carried’ by the wind over debutant home custodian Arie Peursum into the net.

The home side attempted to ‘run the clock down’ in the final minutes but Yate gained possession and launched it downfield for Steve Davis to chase. His resulting cross from the right corner was met by LEWIS LEIGH-GILCHRIST who placed his shot inside the right post to secure a point.
