Severn Sport team of the month for September

Mateusz and Mason make the Team of the month for September

Article from www.severnsprot.co.uk posted by Ryan Butler 1st October 2017

You can only really appreciate the hard work you put in until you see a list of all the games you have covered. 13 games. Unlucky for some but not for us. There is plenty more where that came from. Now before we dive in I will give a special mention to Kieran Squires at Slimbridge who has been sensational in recent games, but doesn't make the cut as he was an unused sub when Matt went to Thornhill Park. There is also a special mention to Edward Williams of Gloucester City who again has been sensational for Gloucester City this month but had his quietest performance at the one game we were at (vs Hampton & Richmond). The third honourable mention is Shaun O'Connor at Longlevens who missed the best part of two games for Longlevens that I saw as he threatened to dominate the whole month! He went off against Fairford and he was missed every minute he didn't play. As with August, its a 4-4-2 formation, traditional. So here is the team.

Goalkeeper – Mateusz Wieczorek (Cirencester Town)

Last Tuesday as I went the Corinium with Matt & Kelsey there were two or three positions still up for grabs, goalkeeper wasn't one of them! But what I witnessed was arguably the best individual goalkeeping performance of the season so far. Wieczorek made a couple of stunning saves in the first half that deserved more plaudits than they received at the time but we were in awe in the stand. In the second he tried very hard to get his side going whilst keeping out Ethan Moore, Lewis Powell and co. With the winning goal he had no chance, a corner floated flat onto the near post, being attacked rapidly. No chance. A very welcome addition in between the sticks!

Right Back – Brad Loveridge (Gloucester City U18s)

The first of a few Young Tigers who have made the squad (a little spoiler there). He was superb on the night in the Youth Cup. Both defensively and going forward he was sensational. He whipped in a beautiful cross for the second goal on the night and had a very composed head for such a young man. Based on what I have seen I seriously would say he is one to watch. A side note, Longlevens duo Ryan Dunn & Ollie Long were just edged out for the right back spot.

Centre Back – Luke Kavanagh (Longlevens)

What a month Kavanagh had! He played pivotal roles in his sides first and second ever wins in the FA Vase, the second of which was a very big banana skin in Tytherington Rocks. I was impressed with his attitude before the game and the way he orchestrated the rest of his defence throughout the 90 minutes. I will forgive him for being caught out for Rocks' goal on the day but what I like about Kavanagh is the way he reacts and his reaction was superb. The reaction transmitted to his partner at the back Ellis Sausman and between them they became water tight. One of the first names on the team sheet this month!

Centre Back – Mason Lewis (Longlevens/Cirencester Town)

I don't even know where to begin with Mason Lewis. Wow, what a player! He is tall, agile, composed (maybe sometimes too composed), he is competitive and he has the ability both with and without the ball. The loan move to Longlevens has done him the world of good. He has played with experienced players and his positioning improved within weeks. With the improvement of positioning came the confidence and then the ability took over. He played left back against the best team in the Hellenic Premier, Highworth Town, and he scored an unbelievable goal. He danced through defenders that wouldn't have looked out of place on Strictly Come Dancing. A great defender and he has a bright future.

Left Back – Leroy Odiero (Evesham United)

I mentioned earlier about going to the Corinium on Tuesday night with a couple of positions available, left back was one of them and boy did Odiero step up! He is strong, he is quick, he scored an absolute bullet header, he was positive with the ball at his feet, he was sensational. Arguably the best individual performance of any one I have seen this season and I have seen 31 games including pre-season! He played in such a way I left the game imagining just how good Odiero could be without a couple of bad injuries he has suffered.

Right Midfield – Liam Gale (Fairford Town)

What a season Fairford Town are experiencing. They picked up their first win of the season (at the 15th attempt) in September, something I am not surprised about. Fairford looked like a new side when they turned up to Saw Mills to play Longlevens. They went 1-0 up early on and looked assured and fluid on the ball. This man was the catalyst. He tormented the Longlevens back line and stretched the play at every chance he got. He has gone on to be a vital part in Fairford's side.

Central Midfield – Noah Smerdon (Gloucester City U18s)

The second of the Young Tigers to make the squad for the month and rightly so. What a player this guy is! He can carry the ball, he can pass the ball, he can win the ball. He is strong, powerful and technically gifted. He scored a thumping header and throughout the game threatened to score more, if he wanted to. He is that good!

Central Midfield – Jay Kennedy (Longlevens)

When I first started watching Longlevens I assumed Kennedy was a number 10 or a winger. He looked like the kind of player who would just get the ball out of his feet and run at a full back. I was wrong! Kennedy plays in a midfield three for Levens and is a ball winning, finesse player. He has scored two great goals this month in the FA Vase. The first was at Ardley United when he flashed one across the keeper from 25 yards on the stretch. A very hard finish! The second was a snapshot from the edge of the box at Tytherington Rocks. He enjoys playing his football and it shows.

Left Midfield – Myron Turner (Longlevens)

Myron is a quiet man. He is a humble man. He is also very good at football. He scored two goals in front of me this month and they both showed different levels and ranges of ability. The first, an equalizer against Fairford showed ability and technique as he fired a knock down by Brad Martin into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. The second, was a poacher's goal at Tytherington after the keeper saved from Dave Merrick (yes, I managed to get him into this post. What a player!). Turner swiveled in the box to fire beyond the keeper and to capitalise on the space in the box.

Striker – Bradley Martin (Longlevens)

He is the only player to feature in both teams of the month this season. He is the top Gloucestershire based striker in the Hellenic Premier with 15 goals now and it was his hattrick at Tytherington that impressed me the most. He was going into the game without confidence and a weight of expectation. He had to deliver and boy did he. Composure to slot beyond the keeper from inside the box, a header at the back post and an indirect free kick. He showed versatility and ability in equal measure. Very impressive.

Striker – Lee Smith (Fairford Town)

Lee Smith. What is there left to say about this man? A Gloucestershire footballing legend amongst fans and he continues to do what he has done at all levels. Score goals. As I said with Liam Gale he is a vital and pivotal part of Fairford's side and if he can be supported further by his teammates and more regularly then there is no reason why Fairford can't stay up. A scoring Lee Smith is a dangerous Lee Smith and unluckily for the defenders in the division he can became a scoring Lee Smith in just an instant.

We had the three honourable mentions at the start of the post but now here are the three substitutes propping up the side.

Nick Bradley (Longlevens)
Craig Martin (Longlevens)
Josh Watts (Gloucester City U18s)

The substitutes are worthy of their places. Now, the manager of this side needs to be chosen. There were a few on the shortlist, Mark Moore (again!) for Longlevens' historic FA Vase run, Paul Collicutt at Evesham United for their great start to the season but I have decided to appoint Neil Mustoe (Gloucester City U18s) as the manager for the Team Of The Month for September as his side are a well oiled machine who are impressive! So here is his XI for the Severn Sport Team of The Month:
