Cirencester secure first home victory on the new 3G pitch.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town   1 – 0   Winchester City

Cirencester secured their first three points at The Corinium Stadium of the 2017-18 Season with victory over high-flying Winchester City in a well contested match.

In a generally improved performance Cirencester scored the only goal of the game in the final quarter when BEN WHITEHEAD latched onto a well weighted Matt Jones pass to smash the ball across the ‘keeper and into the top right corner.

Winchester applied some early pressure but Cirencester came nearest to scoring, in a fairly even first half, when Alan Griffin’s header struck the visitor’s cross-bar as the home side finished strongly.

After the interval it was more of the same as the two sides searched for an opening goal with Matt Wieczorek called upon to make a couple of important saves before Cirencester took the lead through Whitehead.

Cirencester nearly doubled their tally five minutes later when Aidan Bennett clipped the top of the cross-bar from 30 yards.

Winchester made a determined effort to pull the goal back as the game was drawing to a close but a resolute Cirencester defence kept their first clean-sheet of the season to ensure their first victory on the new 3G pitch.
