JACK WATTS scores two but Bristol City U23's win the 2016-17 GFA Senior Challenge Cup Final.

GFA Senior Challenge Cup

2016-17 Final

Bristol City U23’s   4 – 2   Cirencester Town

The long awaited GFA Senior Challenge Cup Final – held over from last season – finally took place at Oaklands Park and Bristol City U23’s were the victors - despite conceding an early goal.

The match provided Cirencester supporters the opportunity to view their ‘new-look’ team in a competitive game as six of the new faces were included in the starting eleven.

The Robins starlets were quickly out of the blocks and it was somewhat against the run of play that Cirencester opened the scoring with a well worked move and clinical finish from JACK WATTS after 8 minutes.

City equalised when JONNY SMITH fired into the top left corner after evading a couple of challenges as he burst down the left channel into the Cirencester area.

Ten minutes later City took the lead as OPANIN EDWARDS was on hand to finish a low cross at the back post.

The same player, OPANIN EDWARDS, was in the right place to score his second just before the interval after Jake Andrews had struck the cross-bar in the build-up.

Cirencester started the second half positively and within minutes pulled a goal back as JACK WATTS scored off the inside of the left post.

The game became ‘nip & tuck’ for a while but City regained their two goal cushion when AARON PARSONS darted between two Cirencester defenders to head a corner kick into the back of the net as the game entered the final quarter.

The City youngsters retained the ball for spells as the game drew to a close and repelled any Cirencester threat during the latter stages to run out worthy winners.
