Cirencester lose opening League fixture against Taunton Town.

Evo Stik Southern League 2017/18

West Division

Cirencester Town   0 – 2   Taunton Town

Cirencester opened their 2017-18 League campaign with a home fixture on their newly installed 3G pitch against Taunton Town - a side that has been in the play-offs for the last three seasons – and lost.

The visitors displayed why they have been consistently at the top end of the table with a solid performance of organisation, power and lively forward play whilst the hosts failed to get into their stride.

Taunton were out of the blocks very quickly and made the pressure count when they opened the scoring after 12 minutes as LEWIS POWELL converted a 1v1 with ‘keeper Matt Wieczorek.

Just after the mid-point of the half Alan Griffin came close to levelling when he struck the outside of the left post from 25 yards but generally Taunton were in control.

The home side started the second half positively and the game was end-to-end during the early stages and they nearly equalised mid-way through the half as Ellis Dunton curled an effort towards the inside of the right post where ‘keeper Lloyd Irish dived full length to keep it out and then blocked the follow-up effort from Ben Whitehead.

Six minutes later Taunton doubled their tally as LEWIS POWELL scrambled the ball into the home net following a free kick.

As the game entered the final ten minutes Cirencester were reduced to ten men when substitute Aidan Bennett was shown a straight Red Card after the Referee consulted with one of his Assistants.
