Academy beat Hartpury to Colleges' West Midlands league title

Their success was confirmed with a 2-1 victory at Heart of Worcester College which moved them to 25 points, three points clear of Hartpury.

Although Cirencester needed only a point to secure the title they dominated the game with captain Matthew Grabe, Dominic Roberts and Luke Jones controlling the game.

Poor finishing and two fantastic saves from the Worcester goalkeeper along with the Ciren defence nullifying the Worcester attack meant the game was goalless at half-time.

The second half continued in a similar vein with Cirencester continuing to push forward while Worcester relied on the counter attack.

Worcester took the lead after one such breakaway with Cirencester goalkeeper Billy King unable to save a shot from just inside the box.

Cirencester showed terrific resilience and determination with winger Essa Sabally twice being denied by the Worcester goalkeeper.

However, Sabally equalised for Cirencester after beating two defenders in the box and hitting the ball past the Worcester goalkeeper.

Cirencester were now well on top and took the lead when the Worcester goalkeeper failed to hold on to a shot from top scorer Dan Grieve, and Riegan Cook followed up to hit the ball into the net.

Cirencester controlled the final 10 minutes to secure the league title.

Academy director of coaching Steve Lowndes said: "I am extremely proud of their performance today in the pressure situation.

"The team spirit and togetherness was outstanding. They have deservedly won the league with some really terrific performances."
