Banbury United  2 - 1 Cirencester Town

For the fourth time this season Cirencester faced Banbury United who are pushing for a play-off place and as in the previous encounters came second despite the home ‘keeper being the busier.

In a well contested match the home side opened the scoring after 18 minutes when LUKE CARNELL latched onto a the ball near the penalty spot, when the Cirencester defence failed to clear a corner kick, and prodded it towards goal where it ricocheted off the outstretched foot of ‘stand-in’ goal-keeper Connor Thompson and into the net behind his left post. 1-0.

Undeterred Cirencester pushed forward and created a number of scoring opportunities but failed to open their account.

Almost immediately from the re-start home ‘keeper Jack Harding was in action as he dived to keep out a snap-shot from Morgan, defended a 1v1 with Alan Griffin and ‘scooped’ another Griffin effort out of his goal – the officials ignored the strong appeals that it had crossed the line.

To make matters worse for Cirencester a few minutes later CONOR McDONAGH looked to be ‘offside’ when he collected the ball behind their back line and confidently tucked it inside the far left post to double the score.  2-0.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes Charlie Griffin entered the fray and looked poised to get on the end of a DAN DEMKIV cross but his presence was enough to distract Harding and the ball went directly into the back of the net.  2-1.

Cirencester increased the pressure and there were a couple of periods when the ball bobbed around the home penalty area but Banbury survived and in ‘added-time’ they nearly added to their tally as McDonagh fired wide of the left post.
