Hitchin Town  2 - 1 Cirencester Town

Cirencester took a depleted side on the long journey to Hertfordshire for this re-arranged evening fixture against ‘play-off’ candidates Hitchin Town and put in a creditable performance when losing by the odd goal in three – the winner being a late penalty.

The home side dominated the early possession but did not trouble the Cirencester goal due to some resolute defending and gradually the visitors began to make some forward progress themselves with efforts from Adam Connolly and Aidan Bennett clearing the home cross-bar.

Four minutes after the interval Cirencester nearly opened the scoring when Henry Spalding curled a superb effort from the right flank narrowly past the far post.

The home side reacted to this by pressing Cirencester during the next fifteen minutes but despite creating opportunities the score-line remained 0-0.

The breakthrough finally came when MATTHEW SPRING shot from 25 yards and en-route it took a wicked deflection that wrong-footed ‘keeper Glyn Garner as he moved to cover his right post – the ball entering the net to his left.  1-0.

Six minutes later Cirencester were level again when a flowing move from left to right reached Spalding who crossed to the far post for Manager CHARLIE GRIFFIN to head home. 1-1.

As the game entered the final ten minutes Hitchin were awarded a free kick on their left flank that was sent towards the far post where Garner attempted to punch it clear – he made contact with the ball and the head of an opponent and the Referee instantly pointed to the penalty spot. A fracas ensued before WILL WRIGHT was able to take and convert the spot kick. 2-1.

Hitchin withstood the final efforts of Cirencester to secure the victory that moves them up to 3rd place in the Premier Division table.
