Cirencester lose to yet another 'added-time' goal.

Evo Stik Southern League 2016/17

Premier Division

Cirencester Town   2 – 3   Basingstoke Town

For the second match running Cirencester lost to a late ‘added-time’ goal – this time to 17th placed Basingstoke Town.

The Centurions started strongly and opened the scoring when Henry Spalding crossed to the far right post for MATT LIDDIARD to powerfully head home.  1-0.

Encouraged the home side pushed forward and had plenty of possession, particularly down their right flank with Dan Demkiv prominent, but the visitors kept them out and finished the half strongly.

A minute from the scheduled interval ‘keeper Alex Tokarczyk prevented Cirencester going to the break with a two goal lead when he tipped an Alan Griffin shot, that was destined for the top right corner, over his cross-bar.

Basingstoke levelled the score ten minutes into the second half from the penalty spot as NANA OWUSU smashed the ball into the top right corner. 1-1.

Two minutes later Cirencester regained the lead with a flowing move and a fine finish from HENRY SPALDING who drove his shot inside the right post.  2-1.

Shortly after the hour mark Basingstoke were level again as AARON JARVIS latched onto a pass down their right channel before calmly chipping the ball over Glyn Garner as he came out to block.  2-2.

Both sides had chances to score but the defences held firm with blocks, goal-mouth scrambles and the ‘keepers making valuable saves.

Cirencester were finally undone by a goal in ‘added-time’ as NANA OWUSU struck a fierce free kick from 25 yards that swerved and dipped en-route to the back of the net.  2-3.
