Cirencester secure a point against high-flying Hitchin Town.

Cirencester Town   0 – 0   Hitchin Town

The new Cirencester Town Management Team of Charlie Griffin and Paul ‘Oggie’ Hunt began their tenure with a tough home fixture against high-flying Hitchin Town and the effort of their charges secured a point.

Cirencester pressed their visitors in the opening minutes but Hitchin soon settled and passed the ball about purposefully and when Kane Smith was put through he fired wide of the left post.

Hitchin thought they had opened the scoring after 25 minutes when Brettt Donnelly diverted a Matt Lench shot into the net but he was ruled to be ‘offside’.

As the half was drawing to a close Cirencester pressed, particularly down the left flank, with Ross Langworthy often involved but were unable to break-through.

The pace of the game increased after the interval and once again Cirencester started positively and 13 minutes into the half Ross Langworthy was put through for a 1 v 1 duel with visiting ‘keeper Michael Johnson that the keeper won.

Eight minutes later Hitchin had the ball in the net for a second time but once again it was ruled out for ‘offside’.

As the game entered the final quarter it was becoming a bit ‘tetchy’ and Referee Simon Shaw produced his Yellow Card a few times before brandishing his Red Card in 82nd minute to Callum Donnelly following a rash tackle on half-way.

Cirencester were going ‘toe-to-toe’ with their visitors and defending with great conviction and on the stroke of full time a shot from James Varney was cleared from near the goal-line by Kyle Lapham to preserve the point the home side had fought so hard for.
