The Centurions defeated by The Martyrs in the Land of the Dragons.
Merthyr Town 3 - 0 Cirencester Town
The Centurions travelled to the Principality to face Merthyr Town, who have made a promising start to their league campaign, and were defeated in the Land of the Dragons.
The Martyrs started strongly and opened the scoring in the 16th minute when IAN TRAYLOR fired home to finish a move he had started even though James Coates had blocked an effort on the goal line earlier in the move. 1-0.
Cirencester reacted to the setback by pressing the home side and Ross Langworthy struck the top right corner of the goal after a sharp turn to the right of the penalty created space for his effort.
Merthyr were in control but Cirencester were competing, soaking up the pressure and counter attacking, but Merthyr increased their lead a couple of minutes before the interval when Traylor fired a snap shot at goal which was deflected for a corner kick. RHYS BAGGRIDGE latched onto the ball at the near post and drove it into the roof of the net from just outside the 6 yard box. 2-0.
The Martyrs pressed from the re-start - winning a couple of corner kicks - and Cirencester responded with a James Mortimer-Jones shot that was blocked on the line.
Midway through the half Merthyr scored again when Keyon Reffell pulled the ball back from the right corner to JON BROWN who picked his spot and fired into the bottom left corner. 3-0.
During the last quarter Cirencester created a couple of openings but were unable to open their account.
In the final minutes Langworthy had a header tipped over the bar by former Centurions custodian Glyn Garner and from the resulting corner Matt Liddiard struck the cross bar.
